Saree

A saree or sari is a fashionable garment in this era that comes in a variety of fabrics and colours predominantly adorned by women in the Indian subcontinent. However, it started as a humble drape usually of cotton fabric thousands of years ago in the Indus Valley Civilization during 2800-1800 BCE.

A saree consists of 4.5 to 9 yards of an unstitched expanse of woven fabric arranged over the body like a toga, with one end tucked at the waist, while the other loose end rests over one shoulder.

The saree is usually worn with a petticoat called a saya or ghagra or parkar around which the saree is draped and tucked in. The third piece of clothing that comes with the ensemble is a fitted blouse usually cropped above the waist, preferably in a matching or contrasting colour.

The most versatile piece of clothing, a saree can be draped in 80 different recorded ways - depending on the fabric, the length of the saree and the culture of the region in the Indian Subcontinent which influence the draping.

A saree is a gender-fluid garment - it can be worn by anyone in any style they choose making it a very popular choice of clothing!
